The "Run-Down": Columbia River & M M @ Vancouver Lake Park

With a new team in our league, we ventured off to their home course at Vancouver Lake Park. Most of the parents as well as I were stunned that we were oblivious to the existence of this highly scenic well-maintained park. The course was not very spectator friendly for the race as it was an "out-and-back" route, but the relatives and friends of the runners were treated to the views of Vancouver Lake, three mountains, and vibrant green grass in the bright October sun for the 10-15 minutes the runners were out of site.

The course was only the second "Orange" course we set foot on during the season. So considering there was adequate competition from the host team Columbia River and Mark Morris, PR's were unavoidable. The real question was how many and how big PR's would surface for the Panthers. Our team notched 11 of them, and the Palmer twins both missed by just 2 seconds. The biggest one of the day came from junior Bekah Shilling as she cut another 44 seconds off her PR, and reduced the G.B.A. down to 23 seconds.

Bekah was joined by sophomore Brooklyn Bausch (19 seconds) along with freshmen Morgan Stinchfield (24 seconds) and Kaylee Timmons (10 seconds) on the PR list for the day. Sophomore Amelia Pullen waltzed to an easy win with at time of 20:32, easily the fastest time of the year on that course. The results on the scoreboard gave the Panther girls a 20 to 37 win over the host team and a 17 to 44 victory over the Monarchs of Mark Morris (no relation to Hallie).

The boys posted a few more PR's than the girls, but could not quite match the team scoring victories. The team score versus Columbia River was close, maybe a bit too close (with a two point win) as the last hundred meters had a 4 point swing in their favor. The score was 26 to 28 on that front, while the contest against the Monarchs was a bit more impressive with a 22 to 39 victory.

On the individual side of things for the guys, sophomore Gabriel Dinnel equally waltzed through the course for an easy win. PR's from the guys came from an abundance of underclassmen: three freshmen, (Derek Lawton - 26 sec; Caden Lowman - 24 sec.; Jackson Keyser - 23 sec.), two sophomores (Trenton Lowe - 24 sec; Warren Henderson - 10 sec.) and a junior (Tanner Coltrane - 4 sec.).

Both boys and girls wrap up the season undefeated in league dual meets. The boys now have a winning streak set at 8 and the girls at 7. In four days, the Panthers head down towards Salem to race in the big show of the George Fox University XC Classic.
