The "Run-Down": Hudson's Bay @ Hudson's Bay

Our shortest race of the year. The 4000 Meter race (the distance the host team Hudson's Bay prefers) went off without a hitch. Our shortest bus ride of the year. However, we did faces transportation issues along the way. This was our only meet of the year where an umbrella was a desired asset, and wouldn't you know it our bus encountered windshield wiper malfunction.

Our 15 minute delay getting to Hudson's Bay course did force our girls to expedite their warm-up routine, but they were good and warm as they approached the starting line despite the rainy conditions. With instructions to not lead the race early, Sophomores Courtney Owens and Hannah Lintala found the pace a bit faster than expected as the Eagle's top girl, in just her second race, unexpectedly pushed the pace. HB's McCoy's effort proved to be her best of the season, breaking up our top three. Courtney blitzed the last 400 of the shortened distance course, posting a time of 16:34, with Hannah in a solid second place (16:52). Senior Karina Miller (17:49) could not quite hang with McCoy like she did the Saturday before at Nike Pre-Nationals, but finished well ahead of the Eagle #2 girl. Junior Meredith Collins had the assignment of pacing Senior MacKenzie Kitchen and Sophomore Abby Lees, then gave a valiant effort to chase down their pack the last 1500 meters (but fell a bit short). Her 'teammanship' assignment did assist MacKenzie to her best effort of the season. Freshman Jeannine Jones courageously raced to 22:30, Senior Genevieve Ashley outkicked an Eagle in 22:39, and Freshman Amber Habkirk ran a decent time regardless of wandering off the course once. The final score was the Panthers 22 to 34 over the Eagles (or should I say "under" since the low score wins).

The boy's had more time to prepare. They also spent more time wrapping things up after the race with a workout on the track. They had a similar race plan as the girls did, with the lead pack having instructions to wait until late to take the lead. The last 1000 meters had five Panthers surge to the front to give them the first Panther sweep in two years. Sophomore Aiden Pullen edged out Junior Bailey Duncan for top honors, with Senior Nicolas Velardi just a few behind. Those places were expected, but the nice little surprise was the next two places were Junior Panthers Luke Belzer and Collin Manning. Our two Freshmen that made an impact on the score (Tanner Lees and Jamison Wright) by pushing back Eagle runners #4 and 5. The final score was an intimidating 15-44. Other fine Panther efforts included Sophomore Nicholas Wolfe (14th of the 25), Freshmen Jonathan Snapp and Brice Olson finishing in front of five Eagles.

The ride home (on a different bus, of course) was much less eventful than our travel to the race - that was a good thing.

Next week we will host our only home meet of the season at William Clark Park. The Middle School race will kick things off, as we host Hockinson and Woodland.
