The "Run-Down": Woodland/Hockinson ( + White Salmon)
For centuries, they have been saying "The more the merrier." That is true with our last home meet of the year. With an extra team of Columbia (White Salmon) to chalk up a win against, the Panthers proved that they were the best team of four to run the "rain hardened" sands of Cottonwood Beach, on the boy's side as well as the girl's.
The appetizer for the High School races was our Middle School show down. The best individual race of the day came from Panther eighth grader Jonathan Wells and course record holder Jacob Lockman of Henkle. Jonathan set the pace with a fast first mile, with the opponent following at "arm's length" a few seconds back. Lockman caught and passed him coming off the beach. Both fine runners kicked hard and Jonathan (10:41) was just 9-10 steps behind the winner (10:38) at the finish. Both runners obliterated Lockman's record set two weeks prior at the Cottonwood Beach Invite.
Other MS Panther boys that performed at their best included eighth graders Sam Lewis (11:21 - 4th place), Ted West (12:25 - PR) and Kolby Lowe (15:16 - PR) as well as seventh graders Trenton Hamilton (13:27 - PR) and Carson Chase (15:40 - PR).
The MS Panther Girls, running in the same race, nearly beat the other three teams combined! They had major efforts worth highlighting from seventh graders Paige Maas (13:15.2 - 5th place) and Tanalee Newton (15:35 - PR) as the team placed 6 girls in the top 12 of 28 total runners.
Boys ran good enough to win, without a finishing effort from runner number 4. Our 2-3-4 finish behind new course record holder Kyle Peterson of Hockinson was too much for the Hawks to recover from. Sophomore Gabriel Dinnel posted the 3rd fastest time ever on our course at 17:09, Senior Aiden Pullen cruised in a comfortable third, and Sophomore Troy Prince-Butterfield broke 18 minutes for the first time on a black course thanks to an All-American caliber kick.
Back in the pack, Sophomore Ian Palmer just missed breaking 19 minutes with his third fastest time on any course! Lifetime PR's came from Junior Jacob Arata and freshmen Derek Lawton and Dallin Kanzler. The Panthers demolished the Woodland Beavers and manhandled the Columbia Bruins while handing the Hawks their first loss of the season.
Panther girls were near flawless. Our top three sophomores still build the foundation for our team success. Amelia Pullen broke the previous course record as she tried to chase down a fine runner from Columbia. Annabelle Palmer chopped off a full minute from her time on this course two weeks ago, her previous Black Course PR. Brooklyn Bausch just missed her "any course" PR with 59 second Black Course PR, earning her the Runnerette of the Week! Senior Hannah Swigert ran away from the talons of two quality Hawks that thought they might have a chance to "catch" her.
For these girls, we still have some improvements to seriously vie for the District title. Junior Bekah Shilling cut her GBA ("Gap Behind Annabelle") to 46 seconds. Freshman Morgan Stinchfield also was within that one minute range (58 seconds) to add more depth to our squad. Sophomore Hallie Morris and Freshman Kaylee Timmons nearly broke 24 on our slower course, reminding us not to forget about them as well. However, the easiest major improvement for the girls will come when Hannah decides to put racing shoes, which her time will most likely surprise the rest of the league when she does.
Other memorable elements of this meet include the quality help at the finish line and the scorer's table (allowing me to escape for a few minutes to be interviewed by KOIN sports anchor David Solano) and the heavy rain holding off until after the last race was finish.
Next week we have two meets - Tuesday at Vancouver Lake against Columbia River and Mark Morris, then Saturday at George Fox Classic, just north of Salem.
