Rock(ies) are Indestructible
So for this series of lessons, it looks like it was intentionally set up to be about movies and songs. Well, not really… it just seems to be turning out this way. In following with the "secondary theme" of movies, lets add the letter "Y" to the word we are embracing. ROCKY. And let's start with the movie.
Long before all of you were born, another currently famous movie star's career was born: Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa. Oh, by the way, he wrote the screenplay himself! The movie's budget was barely over a million dollars; some of Sylvester Stallone's family played some minor rolls to keep the budget down. The movie grossed $225 million at the box office. Who knows how many more millions it made in DVD sales and other promotions. Wait! That was only for Rocky I. Add in Rocky II, III, IV, V, Rocky Balboa (never saw that one), Creed and Creed II (saw neither of those two as well). In total, almost 1 and a half BILLION dollars at the box office was raked in.
The theme over and over again in the series was that Rocky was indestructible. As the old Timex commercial stated, he "takes a licking and keeps on ticking." Scroll down for Rocky ad and Torture test. Rocky was famous for black eyes and puffy cheeks from extreme blows to the face. To some degree, we have our own little "Rocky" on the team...
And it looks like we should modify her nick name to "Spar-rocky."
Now let's tie in a song to this theme. Ironically, right after Queen's "We are the champions" on my You Tube search was "Eye of the Tiger" from this movie. By the way, that is currently my ring tone for Coach Seekins. However, I just changed my generic ring tone this week to "We will Rock You!"
In the USA, we do have a bigger Rocky we should also take a peak at (misspelled on purpose): The Rocky Mountains, which includes Pikes Peak. When I was a kid, there was a monument at the top of Pikes Peak (I think it is the highest point you can drive up to in the Continental US) that honored all Olympic Gold Medalists. A couple of decades ago, it hit the road.
One more 1980's movie connection about the Rocky Mountains being indestructible was in "War Games" where I learned about NORAD, hidden inside the Rockies.
To wrap this up, in order to Rock the World we are in, we must become rocks, and indestructible ones at that! We need to become strong, and then bounce back when we get hit, and hit harder, and get knocked down. And then all we have to do after that, is get back up, and keep ticking!
